Otter Creek Canada Black Bear Hunting

Spring bear hunts take place during the month of May. Hunts are 5 days. We have a very good population of bears on our hunting lease, as well as some brown and blonde color phase bears. We do not put a lot of pressure on our bears, so you will see several bears every night (as many as 12 to 15 per night is not uncommon, with some clients seeing over 20 in one night). Since we only hunt bears in the evenings, you have plenty of time to go fishing for Rainbow Trout & Splake, or try for Northern Pike.

Trail Cams for Better Hunts

Something we do at Otter Creek that very few hunting camps do is that we share the trail camera pictures with our clients/friends. After all it is our job to get you an opportunity at the best bear that we know of. It is much easier to pass up a young bear when you KNOW there’s a bigger bear at your stand site every day.

Black Bear Hunting Bait Sites

We start to prep for the Spring bear hunt season in March by testing all our gear, choosing our bait sites, and getting tree stands in place.  By getting set up in March feed is there for when bears wake up.  We bait with varying combinations of Oats, Oil, Trail Mix, Chocolate, Deserts, etc.  Each bait site is visited every few days.  We will be running approximately 50 baits across a very large territory so we will be where the bears are. As the season approaches, and during the season, we will start to select the baits we hunt based on the bear activity we are seeing on the trail cameras. We put the hunters into the best locations for producing black bear trophies.

Custom Tree Stands

Our tree stands are custom built by a certified fabrication shop and purpose built for bear hunting in Saskatchewan. The seating area is larger than most commercially available stands to give our hunters a little more room, a little more comfort. There are built-in hangers for your gear or your bags.

The stand is wrapped in a camoflage canvas around the security rails to hide the hunter and break up the profile, making a little harder for the bears to detect the hunters.

Fishing at Otter Creek

Enhance your Bear Hunt Trip with fishing at Otter Creek. The lakes surrounding the Otter Creek Bear Hunt Camp offer excellent fishing for Northern Pike, Walleye, Perch and several trout species.

Bear hunting will usually start mid-afternoon so you will have time to send the mornings casting a line before you return to camp and get suited up for your bear hunt. For those hunters who have already tagged out on your bear hunt, you can spend your remaining days in camp at the lake while your guides and hunters are in the forest.

Fishing Options

We have a number of lakes to choose from, each with a different fishing experience from the open waters of Green Lake to the small trout-stocked lakes such as Popular Ridge and Deer Lake.

Green Lake: Pike, Walleye, Perch, Whitefish, Burbot, Tullibee

Hearts Lake: Pike

Popular Ridge: stocked Rainbow Trout, Splake

Deer Lake: stocked Rainbow Trout, Splake

Beaver River: Pike, Walleye, Perch, Whitefish, Burbot, Tullibee

Hunters Lake: Perch, Pike

Doreen Lake: Pike

Bug Lake: Pike, Perch, Walleye

Fishing Gear Recommendations

Fishing tackle: light spinning rod & reel with some spoons, crank baits, small Rapalas etc. We recommend the smaller crank baits and Rapalas for Trout and Walleye while large Pike will feed on just about anything with movement and flash. For an old stand-by, well used in Pike lakes, Len Thompson spoons in 5 of Diamonds and Red & White patterns have been hooking Pike for decades in these waters. 3/8 ounce jig heads with plastic worms, leaches, or minnows are also highly effective when jigging for both Pike and Walleye.

Boats and Licenses

We can pre-purchase your fishing license for you at the same time we purchase your bear license. Please bring $100 cash for the for Fishing license.

Fishing is self guided. Clients will bring their own lures and rods and we will supply the boats. On the lakes that are all near camp hunters will self guide.

Near and Far

There are a few fishing spots almost within walking distance from camp and a few more that will take you a few more minutes to drive. Green Lake is an excellent spot for some of the big Pike in these waters. Others are filled with stocked Rainbow and Splake Trout. If you haven't caught or seen a Splake, make sure to put it on your list. A hybrid of Brook Trout and Lake Trout, they grow faster than purebred lake trout and are much larger than typical brook trout. A great fighting fish with fantastic speckles.

A shore lunch of fresh caught Walleye will make any skeptic a fish lover and Perch are a tasty addition to the menu.
