Saskatchewan Black Bear – Week III

Week III was a story of adaptation. Elsewhere in the province there are extensive wildfires burning. Fortunately, Otter Creek Outfitters is far west of the big Saskatchewan fires and far South East of the big Alberta fire. However, the dry springtime conditions have led the Provincial government to issue a ban on ATVs & UTVs in virtually the entire northern forest region of Saskatchewan, approximately 1/2 of our Province. As most of you are aware, we use UTVs to transport our hunters from the roadside through the forest trails, to the hunting stand sites.

It was fortunate that all the bears shot during Week III were shot in the first half of the week, before we had to scramble to come up with the new transport plan.

But lets chalk one up to the ingenuity and helpfulness of our guides. In less than 24 hours since the ATV/UTV ban was suddenly imposed, we were able to adapt enough Jeeps to allow us to carry bait and hunters and reach our active bait sites in the forest, keeping our promise to our hunters, to provide them with the best possible black bear hunt.

As we begin Week IV, we know that the dedication and resilience of our guides will always be an asset we can count on when faced with any obstacle.

The baits are still hot and the big bears are still hitting them hard..

Saskatchewan Black Bear – Week II

Week II was another amazing week of bear hunting. The highlight of the week was definitely a 410 lb monster black bear! A lesson in patience and knowing what the potential in our territory is. The trail cams show plenty of trophy quality bears still out there and still active on the baits. Fantastic comments from the hunters such as this, "One of the best and funnest trips I have been on. Otter Creek does everything possible to make a successful hunt. Lot of animals and beautiful scenery. The guides, cook, and owners are as friendly and helpful as there are. Thank all of you again. I will return!!"

Ed, Faryn, and the guy’s.

We will continue baiting daily during the season.  You can trophy pics and more trail cam pics on the Black Bear Hunt page.

Saskatchewan Black Bear Season 2025

What excites you about the beginning of the Spring Bear Hunt in Saskatchewan? For Ed and Faryn Anderson of Otter Creek Outfitters it is the anticipation of the bears.

1. We have lots of bears! and lots of big bears. Its going to be an exciting season.

2. We are running 42 baits.

3. First Bait was put up March 13th.

4. Bears started to wake up around April 10th.

We are baiting daily.  All baits have been hit and bears are eating lots. We have quite a few big ones (see below).

There's a lot to get excited about and certainly the bears are the feature attraction. Next to the bears, we eagerly await the arrival of our first set of hunters. They are the focus of our next 5 weeks, putting the hunters in position to have a successful hunt. With our early trail cam pics, we know the bears are there and coming to the bait sites.  Putting the hunters in the stands is when the season preparation, the careful choices of stand sites, the positioning of the bait barrels, weeks of feeding the bears, and countless miles slogging through the late-winter and early spring bush, ice, mud, snow, and dust turns into payoff!

Check some of our favorite pre-season trail camera black bears.  You can see more trail cam pics on the Black Bear Hunt page.

The 2024 Whitetail Survivors – Top 21

It's the first official day of winter, although our unofficial winter started back in early November with the first big dump of snow and overnight (morning drive to the tree stand) temperatures pushing well below -25 (-15 Fahrenheit). With today's weather adding another layer of snow to our northern forests, it seems like a good time to look back. The 2024 Whitetail Deer season is now a few weeks past. Our clients shot some incredible deer, passed on some of the up and comers, and many have already booked for next year's quest for some of the elusive big bucks still on four legs. We have put together an image gallery below of our favorite 21 Whitetail trail cam deer. Our criteria for which deer have been chosen was pretty loose and entirely subjective. Some of these bucks just have tremendous mass. Some have incredible G2 and G3s. Some with amazing brow tines and drop tines. Some with bucks preparing to square off. Some with enormous spread and others are just so very symmetrical it was hard to exclude them.

Every year there are many stories of the deer that were seen but never presented a good shooting opportunity, or those that chased does through the bait site at nearly full speed then were never seen again.  For every deer that is harvested each year, there are countless numbers that our clients have the good sense to let walk away and continue growing. Some of the great news coming out of this season is noticing the number of "almost there" bucks. Not all of the deer roaming our outfitting territory are ready to end up on your wall and some of our top 21 show the tremendous potential that another year of adding mass and inches will produce.

All bucks in the gallery below survived the 2024 hunting season.

Did you notice we cheated and actually posted up 25 instead of the 21 we promised?  Maybe one of the extra 4 will find there way into your stand site in 2025!

2024 Whitetail Season Week 5

Winter is here, more or less as expected.  The snow is now several feet deep after two significant snowfalls and we have had a number of days with mid-winter like temperatures.  This is driving the deer to the feed sites and giving our hunters excellent shooting opportunities.  Trail cam images shown below are all from the fifth week of the Saskatchewan whitetail hunting season. We have another week of updates coming yet as we have just welcomed the final group of hunters for the season. For a look at the trophy deer taken so far this season, as well as more extensive gallery of whitetail trail cam pics, please have a look at the main whitetail deer hunting page.

2024 Whitetail Season Week 4

Snow on the ground and temperatures are dropping.  That means does and bucks looking for readily available feed.  Action at the bait sites is increasing rapidly with excellent quality bucks hitting the feed piles with consistency.  These trail cam images were all taken during the fourth week of the hunting season. Any downed deer have been removed from this trail cam gallery. We have been seeing new deer appearing on the cameras, some we have not yet seen this season.  These images below are some of the Week 4 survivors.

2024 Whitetail Season Week 3

With a number of deer down we are seeing the success rate pick up with changes in weather.  We will post the whitetail deer trophy pics after the season on our whitetail hunting page.  Plenty of good action at the bait sites with excellent quality bucks hitting the feed piles with consistency.  These trail cam images were all taken during the third week of the hunting season and all these bucks are still available to our hunters. Any downed deer have been removed from this trail cam gallery. The guides are constantly working hard to keep the bait sites loaded with fresh feed and we are seeing the shooting opportunities steadily increasing.  These images below are some of the Week 3 survivors.

2024 Whitetail Season Week 2

We are approaching the mid-point of the 2024 Whitetail season. Our muzzle loader week and the first week of rifle season have now passed at Otter Creek Outfitters. The Northern Saskatchewan Whitetails are enjoying a mild fall season so far, but we are seeing more and more activity at the bait sites.  Does are feeding more often and more regularly and the bucks are close behind. There are still many high scoring bucks showing up on our trail cams. Check out the incredible triple drop tine! We have posted a number of the trail cam images in the gallery below. These are images taken during the second week of the hunting season and all these are still on four legs. Any deer already taken have been removed from this trail cam gallery. The guides are constantly working hard to keep the bait sites loaded with fresh feed and we are seeing the shooting opportunities steadily increasing.  These images below are some of the Week 2 survivors.

2024 Whitetail Season Week 1

Week 1 of the 2024 Whitetail season is now behind us. This was our muzzle loader week here at Otter Creek Outfitters in Northern Saskatchewan. There are some excellent bucks that have survived the week. We have posted a number of the trail cam images in the gallery below. You will notice we are seeing quite a bit of daytime movement by the bucks now.
